Were we in the same store ? I found the owner to be pleasant and helpful although I made a very small purchase of two coin books. I would not hesitate to recommend or revisit the San Jose Coin Shop.
I have been to San Jose coin shop many times, and the owner is professional and fair. His knowledge in his field is five stars he's not a crook thief or a liar, which is hard to say for a lot of these types of shops you can trust this shop, I recommend it.
The best coin shop around. Tons of quality coins. Excellent selection. The guy who runs the place is super knowledgeable and helpful. If you don't see what you're looking for ask because they may have it, it might just be out of sight. Good fair prices.
For my first purchase of silver coins ever, I had a great experience at SJC! The transaction was smooth & hassle free. Plenty of selection with fair prices. I got to hold each coin in hand prior to purchasing which is much appreciated. After leaving Vic's completely disappointed, this was a breath of fresh air. Vic made me feel like buying silver coins was near impossible! I walked in to SJC & walked out with bullion within 5 minutes! Highly recommended & I look forward to future business.
LIKE. Place has a good feel to it. Very security conscious. Good transparency on prices. The guy is honest too.
Don is a great guy, knows his stuff...
Great selection of Coins to look at and add to my collection hopefully...
He gave me a very fair price.
5 stars all the way!!
I've only bought from here, but I'm very impressed with the low prices of nice coins. The gentleman who owns the place, is a little hard of hearing and doesn't talk much, but all my interactions with him were just fine. I don't what's up with everyone saying he was rude. He usually is at his desk doing paperwork. He was more than happy to give me advice and values on coins. But I've never tried selling anything to him so idk if that's a different experience. But mine have always been great experiences.
This review is about selling coins to SJCS. I didn't buy anything there, nor inquire about prices.
I have seen the reviews of people who didn't like the personality of the shop owner (Don) and got put off by it. I too have to admit that the phone "presence" comes off as "disinterested", but PLEASE give the guy a chance. We're all different and you just have to take him for what he is: quiet, not bubbly, but calm and very knowledgeable about coins! If you are respectful and polite, the man will treat you right, and you will see his fine personality come out, especially in person, in the store.
I went there to sell some coins, and right away he looked at what I had and told me what he would pay. I tried Vic's down the street and that guy was nothing but an annoying hassle; wouldn't actually have a discussion with me about my collection and what I had to sell.
So, all told, Don did right by me, gave me some very fair prices on the coins I was selling (I had already tried online coin dealers.... very slippery or, they quoted very low prices for buying). I walked out of there with a check for 5 figures!
I think people need to realize the difference between buying/selling bullion coins (krugerrands, maple leafs, etc) which basically have no collector's value, and collectible coins that are old, or rare. You're better off selling your krugerrands and whatnot to an online dealer who can give you a better percentage of spot price (or even a little over spot) due to their volume and their quick-turn resale of these items at significant markup!
But, if you have collectible coins with numismatic value far above their "melt" value, San Jose Coin Shop is a great place to do business, if you're selling.
Fast, friendly, service and we got a nice price on our silver coinage. Donald is a treat to banter with and shared his knowledge with my mom on a few things while we got to wander and enjoy the goods. Thanks a lot!
Great place with Don GET A GRIP YOU NEGATIVE PEOPLE
I have done business here many times and have always been treated fair and well. You be nice and the proprietor is nice lol
Quick and easy. Unloaded some extra 999 silver rounds I had. The man that helped me was nice and professional. He paid close to spot price which was great as well. Recommend.
Honest, fair rates, no BS. If you walk in, knowing what you want or at least having a minimum understanding of what you're doing, this is the place to come and get real answers from a rare guy who knows what the hell he's talking about.
Ignore all the window-shopping snowflakes expecting to get a world-class education on the coin hobby in 2 minutes.
If you're a serious coin collector looking for a great deal from a seasoned expert, this is the ONLY place to find it in San Jose and even surrounding cities.
Don has a huge selection of coins. The people that are giving him one-star's, I can tell aren't really people-people. This gentleman is older and of a different genre from the people who are giving him one -stars. You have to be all things to all people. I can tell these people haven't adjusted their mindset to deal with someone who is not of their type or genre
I have been in several times to both buy and sell coins and jewelry. I was pleased with my experience. The proprietor is very professional, knowledgeable and will not try to sway your decision one way or the other. I dropped by once and the shop was closed, but I am glad I returned. It was definitely worth it.
Just super friendly knowledgeable and honest in both my visits. I can recommend without reservation.
N.M. San Jose
I was hesitant on coming in due to all the bad google and yelp reviews but I took my chances. I'm happy I did because the older gentlemen who helped me was very knowledgeable about the items I brought in and gave me a fair price for the items I sold him. For any items he didn't know value he looked it up in a book or online. He felt bad because some of the proof sets I had were not worth more than their face value and he suggested that I just give to family members as mementos. I was surprised at all the negativity about this business as I understand he doesn't have a dance and song for you when you come in but he is friendly enough to do business with. I will definitely be back again!
Iv been reading some of these negative reviews. What are you expecting Santa clause. The gentlemen that help me gave me all kinds of advice on silver. You pay what the market price is at the end of the day. I have purchased 4 different Silver bars.. Easy transaction.
Awesome coin shop full of wonders! The owner was so kind and informative. The prices were very fair. 10/10 would go again!
The owner was very friendly and he is very knowledgeable of his coins. Whatever I needed for my collection, he had it. I have bought many different coins from this shop since 2011 when I became a collector. Overall, great service and a great owner. I'll be back for more coins to buy!
I just want to say what a great experience I had in San Jose Coin Shop. I went in there with silver dollars from my grandparents and the gentleman that helped me was very nice. He was in the shop by himself and very busy but took the time to look at each coin and gave me a GREAT price for my coins. He even took the time to briefly explain why some coins were worth more than others to my oldest son who was with me. I think he is very knowledgeable and fair. I would definitely go back there again.
I experienced wonderful customer service and greatly appreciated it.
Fascinating collection of foreign and domestic coins. Very impressive.
I visit this shop often and always get great deals. I never had any problems with the owner. He is a very nice guy. Sometimes it takes me hours to look throw his coins and I ask him many questions and he is always patient with me. I will return to this shop again...
I came here the other day and was really impressed by what I saw. They really have some nice coins and the gold trade in value is worth it here too. The man at the front desk was very polite, knowledgeable, and informative. I wouldn't mind returning to this shop.
This is my second time using these guys and they will match the price of other places; like my favorite store that recently gave me a quote on a piece. I find them very timely, personable and trustworthy. I highly recommend this coin shop.
San Jose Coin Shop owner Donald Lynch in an authority on coins and all things numismatic. Donald has owned the shop for more than 30 years. He has a huge inventory and I always find something new and interesting in his shop. His shop hours are incorrect on the Google listing, to confim, he is open M-F from 9:30-5:30 and on Saturday from 10-4. He will answer any questions you may have and offers fair appraisals on anything you bring into the shop. I have sold a lot of scrap gold and coins and have always felt the transaction of honest and very fair. Don't waste your time with Vic's coin shop down the street (on the corner of Willow & Lincoln), there is no comparison.

Wish I would have found this place before others!!!!
If you have old American coins, go here. Don't even check out the stores near here. We went to place near here. Had some Buffalo Nickels. The man said "spend them, they are only worth fave value." His passion is Italian coins. San Jose Coin Shop going rate was 40 cents for 4 digits. So much for face value.
We went to San Jose Coin to get a birthday coin display. Which he had. Not the best frame but it did the job.
We also took in some silver coins to be evaluated. This place rocks. He really knows what he is looking at.
Give him a chance if your looking to sale or even buy. Just remember to ring the bell before entering.
I have called and gone into this shop many times, never had a problem and find his prices are very much in line with others. I must admit I was not looking for a new best friend, got the info I asked for and the coins I wanted at a fair price.
I have been buying coins from Don every year for 25+ years. This is a one man shop. Don has always been the expert and would never lead a customer. You are allowed to make all decisions!
I cannot believe the comments about Don. I found him to be extremely efficient and very professional. I had him appraise a lot of silver that was found at my uncle's estate. Got a great deal from him. In fact, when I went in to bring the silver I had him look at a diamond ring and to give me his thoughts. He said I could get between $1000 to $1500 for the ring. I had just had the ring appraised at another jewelers at he said the ring was only worth $380 and if he bought it from me he would give me less than that. Crook. Anyway, Don's great and I have no complaint whatsoever. Also, another very important thing. I left a gold coin in his shop when I left. It was worth $370 or so dollars. Don ran out with the coin to tell me I left it in the shop. Tells you something about integrity.
Looking at the other Yelp reviews, it appears that either you like Don or you don't. I've been in San Jose Coin Shop several times over the past couple of years and while he doesn't greet you enthusiastically, he is professional.
I had an old silver bar that we weren't sure if it was genuine and had an odd "defect" in it. Don was very upfront with me about his concerns and worked with me to explain my options. In the end, I ended up selling it to him and was impressed with his honesty and integrity. He gave me a very fair price for it. He knows his business and I trust him.
I can't speak to the experiences that others had, but mine was very positive and I won't hesitate to go back.
Here is why I am giving this shop and it's owner 5 stars:
I went to sell a bunch of old coins that my grandfather had stored in a cardboard box. There were 2 people in line in front of me so I waited 15-20 min. before I could see the owner. It turned out that most of the coins were not very valuable and I ended up getting about $200 for them. I left and felt comfortable with what I received.
During that same day my i received a call from a number I was unfamiliar with and did not answer it. An hour later I got a call from the same number but was busy and did not answer it. ANOTHER hour later I get a third call from the same number and decide to see who it is. It turns out to be the owner of San Jose coin shop. He tells me that inside the folds of the box that contained my coins a single coin was wedged inside. This coin was worth over $200 alone and he wanted to make sure that I got the money I was owed!!!
This is the definition of integrity. This guy could have EASILY kept the coin. He could have EASILY called me once and when I didn't answer or return his call just figured "oh well, it's mine now." Yet, he did the right thing and made sure that I knew what I had and what it was worth. I can't speak highly enough of the integrity of this man.
As far as the negative reviews on here... I can't comment. But,if you want to sell or buy coins anywhere in the Bay Area and are concerned about honesty - this is the place to go.
Super friendly and quick service! Definitely recommended. I walked in with a tin can full of random coins and walked out with $50. I'm happy!
This man was so helpful, he had good advice, and unlike the other coin shop I went to, he made me feel like an actual customer. I didn't feel like I was wasting his time. I kinda knew I didn't have anything too valuable, but he still acted interested and answered all my questions! I'll definitely go back if I ever have anymore questions!!
Actually, this man had very good advice and was very helpful. I can tell he really knows what he is doing, and the shop had some pretty awesome stuff.
